The Claim

Bin Salman survives an assassination attempt.

Emerging story

Recently, news outlets and social media platforms have been circulating a video purportedly documenting an assassination attempt on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, along with several members of the Royal Guard in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Following a retweet by Dr. Sam Yousef's account at 10:50 p.m., the tweet gained momentum, spreading to English-speaking accounts and certain Israeli media outlets when Mossad Commentary shared the news.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading, as the video is outdated and relates to a previous traffic accident in Riyadh. Additionally, there is no evidence of an assassination attempt on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

A Fire Erupted Following a Collision Between Two Cars in Riyadh

Through investigating the primary footage of the circulating video, Misbar discovered that the original clip was published on March 16 via a TikTok account named “Saudi M&m’s” and was subsequently shared by accounts on X. In the full version of the video, which was excerpted by those circulating the recent claim, the description “King Salman Road fire” is visible.

However, Misbar discovered that both the original publisher's TikTok account and the accounts that had posted it on X had removed the video. Nonetheless, on March 16, by searching for relevant keywords and filtering search results, Misbar found local Saudi news reporting the announcement from the General Directorate of Saudi Civil Defense regarding the extinguishing of a fire in two vehicles in Riyadh.

On the same morning, the Civil Defense also released a picture of the two cars that caught fire as a result of the traffic accident in Riyadh, confirming the absence of casualties. By comparing the details in the image published by the Civil Defense with those in the circulating video, such as the arrangements of letters and shapes on the illuminated store sign, the mesh glass facade, and the type and color of the burned car (a gray Range Rover), it became evident that they were indeed from the same accident.

No Signs of Security Tension Detected in Riyadh

The Saudi Ministry of Interior did not publish any statement or information related to a security incident or assassination attempt, nor was the allegation published through official media or on any credible media outlet.

The specialized open-source intelligence account, OSINT Defender, stated that several residents of Riyadh and an individual associated with the Saudi Royal Guard Regiment have confirmed that the “unconfirmed reports” made earlier tonight regarding an assassination attempt against Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman are “totally false and that there has been no attack tonight within or near the city.”
