U.N. Backs Palestineā€™s Bid to Become a Full U.N. Member

Contrary to social media usersā€™ viral claim, Palestine has not been granted a full membership yet.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has overwhelmingly voted in favor of a Palestinian bid for full U.N. membership, acknowledging Palestine as qualified to join and urging the U.N. Security Council to give "favourable consideration."

Full membership can only be granted by the U.N. Security Council, and the U.S. vetoed a similar bid last month.

While the current resolution does not grant Palestinians full membership, it recognizes them as qualified to join and provides Palestine with increased participation and certain rights within the (UNGA).

By a significant majority, the assembly voted by 143 to nine, with 25 abstentions.

The draft resolution comes after the United States vetoed Palestine's admission as a full U.N. Member State at the Security Council on April 18. The earlier draft resolution, submitted by non-permanent Council member Algeria, received 12 votes in favor, with Switzerland and the United Kingdom abstaining.

Palestine to Gain New U.N. Rights and Participation Privileges

Later this year, Palestine will gain several new rights and changes in status. These include being seated among Member States in alphabetical order, making statements on behalf of a group, submitting and introducing proposals and amendments, and co-sponsoring proposals and amendments, including on behalf of a group.

In addition, Palestine will have the right to propose items for the provisional agenda of regular or special sessions and request the inclusion of supplementary or additional items. Members of the Palestinian delegation will be eligible to be elected as officers in the plenary and Main Committees of the General Assembly. Furthermore, Palestine will have full and effective participation in U.N. conferences and international meetings convened under the auspices of the General Assembly or other U.N. organs.

Mass Evacuations in Rafah as Israeli Attacks Escalate

Today marks the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, recalling the displacement of Palestinians from their homes in 1948 during the Israeli occupation. Sadly, history repeats itself as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to evacuate Rafah city and an additional 100,000 evacuated the north due to new Israeli attacks.

Recent events underscore the devastating consequences of Israel's military strikes on Gaza, with over 35,173 people killed and 79,061 wounded since October 7. In the past 24 hours, 82 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in relentless Israeli air assaults, marking the highest single-day death toll in many weeks.
