Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating a video purportedly showing the Israeli ship "MSC ALEXANDRA," which was targeted by Houthi ballistic missiles on Friday, May 24, in the Arabian Sea.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading, as the scenes are old and not of the Israeli ship "MSC ALEXANDRA," which was targeted by Houthi ballistic missiles in the Arabian Sea.
The Burning Ghost Ship Was Transporting Luxury Cars
The circulated video clip was published on February 18, 2022, depicting the "Ghost" cargo ship, laden with luxury cars, engulfed in flames amidst the Atlantic Ocean. It was abandoned amidst the waves after its crew fled due to the fire.
The "Ghost" ship was carrying 1300 luxury cars, including vehicles from Bentley, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, Audi, and Porsche, before catching fire near the Azores islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Media reports at the time indicated that the 22 crew members were unharmed and were transferred to the nearby Portuguese island of Faial following the incident.
The Houthis Target Two Israeli Ships and a Third Greek One
The claim began circulating after the Yemeni Houthi group announced the execution of three operations against three ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, including two Israeli ships and one Greek ship.
Houthi spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, stated that the Yemeni armed forces targeted the Israeli ship "MSC ALEXANDRA" in the Arabian Sea with a number of ballistic missiles. He also mentioned that they targeted the "YANNIS" ship belonging to the Greek company "Eastern Mediterranean Maritime" in the Red Sea, inflicting precise damage on it.
Saree clarified that the targeting of the Greek ship was in response to the docking of three ships belonging to the same company in Israeli ports on the fourth and fifth of May. According to Saree, the targeting was part of the fourth stage of escalation, which includes targeting all ships violating the Israeli navigation ban and heading to ports of occupation in the Red Sea or any other area.
The Houthis also announced that their missiles targeted the Israeli ship "ESSEX" sailing in the Mediterranean Sea after it violated the ban on entry into the ports of the Israeli occupation, according to a statement by the group's official spokesman.
