Doctored Video Shows Israeli Envoy Confronting U.N. Over Moment of Silence for Raisi's Death
The Claim
Israel's ambassador to the UN: "The butcher of Iran will not be missed." Instead of making inflammatory statements, Israel should reflect on its own dark history of killing and bombing civilians. Israel must stop committing war crimes and allow Palestinians to have their state according to UN resolutions.

Emerging story
After the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a video circulated on social media purportedly showing Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, holding up a sign that read, "The butcher of Iran will not be missed."
One Twitter user shared the video, praising Ambassador Erdan as a brave man standing against many "coward clowns at the UN Secretary Council, holding a moment of silence for the death of President Raisi known as "Butcher of Tehran."
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found it to be fake.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be doctored.
This Is an Edited Video of Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N.
Contrary to anti-Iran President social media users, the video does not feature the Israeli ambassador to the U.N. confronting the U.N. Secretary Council holding a moment of silence for the death of President Raisi.
The original scene, instead, features the Israeli ambassador to the U.N. holding an Iranian protester's sign to denounce Raisi at the U.N.
Israel's U.N. ambassador photographed the poster of an Iranian demonstrator outside the U.N. in New York and held it up during the speech of Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi. He had a sign with Mahsa Amini's picture on it, saying, 'Iranian women deserve freedom now.'
Mahsa Amini is a Kurdish Iranian woman, 22, who died in September 2022 while in custody for allegedly flouting Iran's Islamic dress.
Furthermore, a Twitter user shared the unedited video on September 20, 2023, under the caption, “While the UN rolls out the red carpet for the Butcher of Tehran, Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, left the UNGA during Iran's President Raisi speech, while holding the picture of Masha Amin.”
Israeli Envoy Erdan Lashes Out as U.N. Mourns Iran’s Raisi
Israeli envoy Gilad Erdan lashed out at the U.N. as it mourned Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi. Despite Raisi earning the nickname "Butcher of Tehran" for his role in Iran’s human rights abuses, the United Nations held a moment of silence for him on Monday, following his death in a helicopter crash.
This moment of silence was requested by Russia, China, and Algeria, and included participation from representatives like United States Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood. State Department spokesperson Matt Miller later addressed the U.S.’ participation in the moment of silence during an afternoon press briefing.
Israeli U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan condemned the moment of silence for Raisi, calling it a "disgrace" to honor a "mass murderer."
