Three U.S. Service Members Injured in Non-Combat Incidents Near Gaza Coast
Contrary to the social media users’ fake claim, the U.S. Naval Institute, citing Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, reported that three service members sustained injuries in non-combat-related incidents at sea on Thursday.
According to the report, a U.S. soldier involved in the Gaza pier mission sustained serious injuries on Thursday and was evacuated to Israel for medical treatment, as confirmed by two defense officials to USNI News.
The soldier was engaged in operations on the staging platform located two miles off the coast of Gaza. This platform serves as a point where trucks loaded with aid supplies are transported from cargo ships onto Army watercraft, defense officials informed USNI News. The incident occurred while the roll-on roll-off cargo ship MV Benevides was docked at the platform.
At a Thursday Pentagon briefing, Cooper informed reporters that out of the three injuries reported, two were minor, and those personnel have resumed their duties. One individual is currently receiving treatment at a nearby Israeli hospital.
No specific attacks or incidents targeting the pier or the staging area two miles off the coast were mentioned by officials.
The U.S. Constructed Gaza Shore Pier for Aid Delivery
At the beginning of March, President Biden announced the initiative during his speech, expressing concern about the dire situation in Gaza, including the risk of widespread famine among its 2.3 million inhabitants. He emphasized the need for urgent humanitarian assistance, declaring that the U.S. would take a leading role in relief efforts.
Biden outlined plans to establish a temporary dock on the Gaza shoreline to deliver essential supplies such as food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters. He assured that no U.S. troops would be deployed on the ground for this mission, highlighting the intention to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza significantly. However, Biden also urged Israel to fulfill its responsibilities in addressing the humanitarian crisis.
Aid groups said that the newly operational floating pier, which has been facilitating aid delivery to Gaza since early May, is being used to divert attention from Israel's blockade of land crossings.
