After the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, Dortmund fans shared a video purporting to show a large crowd of team supporters in London gathering in support of the German team ahead of the match.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating footage and found the claim to be misleading.
A thorough reverse image search revealed the video making the rounds to be older than claimed.
The Video Was Shot Before the UCL Semi Final
The video is not recent, contrary to the social media users’ claim. The video was captured on May 1, ahead of the Dortmund UCL semi final match against the Paris Saint Germain team.
Misbar's team traced the original video back to May 2, when it was shared on Instagram.
The same video was also uploaded to TikTok on May 5.
In addition, ULTRAS LIFE, a YouTube channel, shared a video showing the same scene on May 2. The video’s title reads, “BVB-Gigantic Fan March | Dortmund vs PSG 1/5/2024 UCL.”
According to the video's caption, the scene was filmed during a joint march to the stadium before Borussia Dortmund's Champions League match against PSG on May 1. The Borussia fans, in large numbers, marched from Westpark to the stadium on Wednesday evening, May 1.
Dortmund Defeats PSG in the UCL Semi Final
Borussia Dortmund defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi final clash. The match was played at Dortmund's home ground, BVB Stadion Dortmund, on May 1.
The Germans had previously beaten Atletico Madrid 5-3 on aggregate in the quarterfinals to reach the last four, while PSG overturned a 3-2 home defeat by beating Barcelona 4-1 in Spain.
Dortmund aimed to become European champions for the second time in their history, having defeated Juventus 3-1 in the 1997 final. With a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Dortmund doubled their advantage with a strong away performance, ultimately beating PSG to reach their first Champions League final since 2013.
Real Madrid Beats Dortmund in the UCL Final
Real Madrid claimed their fifteenth European title at Wembley with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final. Second-half goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinícius Júnior secured the win for Madrid, despite a spirited performance from the German side.
Dortmund came close to scoring in the first half, hitting the post and creating two clear chances, but Real Madrid's strong connection with this competition saw them through.
Toni Kroos, in his final game for the club, provided the assist for Carvajal's header from a corner with 16 minutes remaining. Shortly after, England's Jude Bellingham set up Vinícius Júnior to score, sealing the victory against a stretched Dortmund defense.
