Emerging story
On June 6, 2024, Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and his wife Brigitte, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were together in Normandy, France, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.
Social media users have been circulating a video claiming that the U.S. president Joe Biden was trying to sit in a nonexistent chair.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading.
The video was clipped and shared before the moment that Joe Biden sat in a real chair that was directly behind him. A review of a longer version posted on YouTube confirmed that the video was clipped just before the moment that Joe Biden reached down to sit on the chair.
Bidens and Macrons were standing in front of the chairs, Biden reached down to sit, then he paused for a brief moment when the speaker welcomed the U.S Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, then he sat down. Seconds later Jill Biden, Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron sat down in their chairs.
Notably, Joe Biden, the 46th and current president of the United States, announced his candidacy for re-election for a second presidential term on April 25, 2023.
Wall Street Journal Questioning Biden’s Cognitive Health
In a 3,000-word story headlined “Behind Closed Doors, Biden Show Signs of Slipping,” the Wall Street Journal published an article on Tuesday questioning the U.S. president's cognitive health and mental memory. The article was a result of interviewing 45 lawmakers and officials from the administration over the course of several months about the president's mental performance.
They listed examples of slow and inaccurate responses and events President Joe Biden has allegedly made behind the scenes and publicly.
The article reported that the 81 years old commander in chief frequently relied on notes in meetings due to his lack of memory, and that at times has closed his eyes for so long that people wondered if he had drifted off. However, the White House countered that President Biden is still a strong leader who maintains cleverness.
