Old Video of Explosion at a Pipeline in Egypt Shared As Recent
Contrary to the viral claim on social media, the video is older than alleged. The original footage, which dates back to July 2020, shows cars engulfed in flames following a massive fire along a pipeline in Egypt.
Global News uploaded the video to YouTube on July 14, 2020, with a caption stating that a massive fire broke out in Egypt's Shuqair-Mostorod crude oil pipeline.
Another video showing the same scene from a different angle was uploaded to YouTube on July 14, 2020. The video's title indicates that it was filmed on the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road following a gas line explosion.
The CNBC Arabic reported that the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum stated the fire in the Shuqair-Mostorod pipeline transporting crude oil has been brought under control. According to the ministry’s statement, the fire ignited "at the beginning of the Cairo-Ismailia desert road due to a break in the line and a spark caused by the congestion of cars on the road, leading to the ignition of the leaked crude."
Dr. Khaled Mujahid, Advisor to the Minister of Health and Population for Media Affairs and the Ministry’s official spokesman, explained that 15 equipped ambulances were dispatched to the accident site. The injured were transported to El-Salam General Hospital with injuries including burns of varying degrees and suffocation, and all cases are receiving the necessary care.
Shuqair-Mostorod Pipeline Resumed Operation in July 2020
On July 30, Reuters reported that an Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum official confirmed the Shuqair-Mostorod pipeline was back in operation, with a capacity of 20,000 tons per day of crude oil. The pipeline had broken, causing a massive fire that injured 17 people. The pipeline extends from the port of Shuqair on the Red Sea to the Mostorod refinery complex in Greater Cairo.
A Massive Fire Erupted in Al-Barajil, Giza
Misbar searched online for recent reports on fire incidents in El-Salam City, Cairo, but found no recent coverage. However, the latest fire in Egypt occurred on June 14 in the Al-Zarayeb area of Al-Barajil in the Ossim Center in Giza Governorate.
