The Claim

Muslims in Indonesia STAND WITH ISRAEL. 🇮🇱🇮🇩 I hope to visit Nusantara, Indonesia's new planned capital, one day. We were never meant to be enemies.

Emerging story

Pro-Israel social media users widely shared an image allegedly showing a group of Indonesian women joining hands together to form the Star of David, symbolizing their support for Israel.

Hananya Naftali, a digital aide to the Israeli prime minister, posted the photo on his X account with the caption, "Muslims in Indonesia STAND WITH ISRAEL. I hope to visit Nusantara, Indonesia's new planned capital, one day. We were never meant to be enemies."

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral image and found it to be fake.

Misbar’s team found the image making the rounds to be AI-generated.

AI-Generated Image of Indonesian Women Showing Support for Israel

Despite the image being widely shared online, it is not authentic; it was created using an AI image generator.

The image contains several telltale signs of AI generation, such as the improper depiction of the women's hands, with fingers blending together and fingers sticking out of palms.

AI engines often struggle with rendering hands accurately because they are a relatively small and less consistent part of the human form compared to faces.

In addition, a closer examination of the details on the left side of the image reveals that the office and the items above appear more cartoonish than real, further indicating that the photo was created using AI.

Moreover, it is apparent that the faces of the women in the image are inconsistent, and the scarves they are wearing do not appear realistic. The colors in the image are also not consistent with each other, providing further evidence that this is not a genuine photo.

AI-Generated Images Compromise Integrity During the War on Gaza

AI image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney have gained popularity due to their user-friendly nature, enabling anyone to create new images through text prompts.

Although generative AI is currently most commonly used for satire and entertainment, its technology is rapidly becoming more sophisticated.

Amid the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, social media users have widely shared AI-generated images on various platforms. However, the dissemination of such content risks obscuring the actual reality.

Misbar's investigative team has been working tirelessly to debunk these fake AI-generated images and verify their authenticity.

Indonesians Rally in Support of Palestinians in Gaza

On December 10, 2023, Al Jazeera Network reported that more than 1,000 Indonesians rallied in support of Palestine in Medan, North Sumatra’s largest city and capital. Attendees described their fellow Muslims in the Middle East as "like family."

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have occurred across Indonesia since the start of the war in Gaza.

On November 5, 2023, AFP uploaded a video showing thousands of Indonesians from diverse religious groups participating in a Muslim-led rally in a collective plea for a ceasefire in Gaza.

On May 9, chants of “Free, Free Palestine!” resounded at university campuses across Indonesia, with hundreds of rallies inspired by student protests overseas. Local demonstrators aimed to maintain the momentum of opposition against the Gaza War, including a boycott movement that continues to impact targeted businesses.
