Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating a video claiming to show protesters in New York City taking control of the Brooklyn Museum and displaying a large banner featuring the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
Misbar's team found that the video has been digitally altered. During the demonstration on May 31 when a large group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered at the Brooklyn Museum, there was not a poster of Ali Khamenei displayed on the building.
The banner of free Palestine can be viewed in multiple protest videos.
Pro-Palestinian Demonstrators Swarm Brooklyn Museum, Dozens Arrested On May 31
On May 31, at the Brooklyn Museum, a large group of people supporting Palestine protested, and 34 individuals were arrested by the New York City Police Department. The protest began around 4 p.m. near the Barclays Center in Fort Greene, with demonstrators marching towards the museum half an hour later.
Upon their arrival, museum staff quickly locked the doors, and some protesters climbed the building to display a big banner that said, "Free Palestine. Divest from genocide." Police arrived at the scene and clashed with the protesters, leading to the arrests, even though the museum did not call them.
The Brooklyn Museum officials stated that the protest was unexpected, and they were surprised by the demonstrators scaling the building. Despite the arrests, the protest was largely peaceful, with the activists aiming to raise awareness about the ongoing conflict in Palestine and urging divestment from companies allegedly involved in human rights violations. The event highlighted the growing support for the Palestinian cause in New York City and the broader United States.
Injured Palestinian Strapped To Israeli Military Vehicle In West Bank
The Israeli military fastened a wounded Palestinian man to the front of a military vehicle during an operation in the occupied West Bank on Saturday. Video footage shows the man lying across the hood of the Israeli jeep as it passed through a neighborhood in Jenin. The man appeared to be slouched on the vehicle's hood as it drove past Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances.
The PRCS reported that the Israeli military prevented their teams from administering first aid to the injured man in the Jabarat area of Jenin. According to the PRCS, the Israeli military then placed the injured individual on the military jeep's front and apprehended him before later permitting their teams to transfer him to the hospital. The man's current health status and identity remain unknown.
In response to queries about the event, the Israeli Forces acknowledged on Saturday that their troops breached "orders and standard operating procedures" and stated that an inquiry would be initiated. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) disclosed that since October 7, more than 500 Palestinians, including over 100 children, have died in the West Bank, with the vast majority of the fatalities occurring during Israeli military operations.
In addition to Israeli military incursions in the West Bank, there has been a surge in violence committed by Israeli settlers against Palestinians. Over 700,000 Jewish settlers reside in settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are deemed illegal under international law and widely recognized as a major barrier to a two-state solution.
