The Claim

This isn’t Auschwitz. It’s Israel. These are Palestinians prisoners, starved by Israel.

Emerging story

Amid the recent famine in Gaza caused by the ongoing Israeli war, a video clip circulated widely on social media, allegedly showing Palestinian prisoners in an Israeli concentration camp suffering from starvation.

One X user posted the video with the caption, "Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz in 1941? No, these are Palestinian prisoners in an Israeli 'concentration camp' in 2024. History is repeating itself."

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral footage and found the claim to be misleading.

After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video making the rounds to be unrelated to Gaza or Israel.

The Video Was Shot in a Rehabilitation Center in Pakistan

Contrary to the widely circulated claim on social media, the video has no connection to the ongoing Israeli genocidal campaign against Palestinians in Gaza, nor was it shot in Palestine or Israel.

The video dates back to April 26, 2024, and was originally filmed in a rehabilitation center in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Misbar’s team found that the center provides numerous services, including establishing a drug-free society, rehabilitating individuals addicted to drugs, holding anti-drug seminars and rallies, engaging addicts in sports activities, offering free education materials, providing religious education and encouraging regular prayer, helping patients become respectable citizens, and collaborating with other organizations to eliminate drug use.

The U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) emphasized the stark picture of ongoing hunger and the critical need for continuous humanitarian access. The March IPC assessment had classified 677,000 Gazans, including 165,000 in northern Gaza, as being in Phase 5, with famine projected in the north by the end of May due to the war and lack of humanitarian aid.

A recent published report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which assesses global food insecurity and malnutrition, warned that almost all of Gaza could face famine within the next three months.

The latest IPC assessment states that over 495,000 Gazans, including 60,000 in the north, continue to face catastrophic hunger.

Gazan Children Starve to Death as Famine Spreads

According to Gaza's media office on June 22, at least 34 children have already died of malnutrition in Gaza. The actual number could be higher, as restricted access to Gaza has hampered aid agencies' efforts to fully assess the crisis. More than 50,000 children require treatment for acute malnutrition, according to the U.N.’s Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
