Israel Releases Al-Shifa Hospital's Head After Seven Months
Israel has released the head of Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, after more than seven months of detention. Dr. Abu Salmiya stated that the conditions for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are worse than ever. He also alleged that some detained medical staff had died in prison due to torture.
"We were subjected to severe torture, and my little finger was broken. I was repeatedly subjected to being hit on the head, causing bleeding many times," he said. "There was almost daily torture in the Israeli prisons. When prisoners' cells were raided, they were severely beaten every day."
Similar incidents of mistreatment have been reported by other Palestinians detained since October 7.
Israeli Ministers and Politicians Denounced Dr. Abu Salmiya's Release
In Israel, several ministers and leading politicians have expressed outrage at Dr. Abu Salmiya's release. Former war cabinet minister Benny Gantz stated that a government that frees suspects accused of sheltering those responsible for the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7 should resign. The far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has called for the head of Israel's internal security service, Shin Bet, to be dismissed.
Shin Bet, in response, issued a statement saying that overcrowding in Israeli jails is forcing the release of detainees such as Dr. Abu Salmiya. It added that he met all the requirements for release regarding the threat he might pose but said it would investigate the decision to free him.
Under pressure from hardline coalition partners, including Ben-Gvir, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swiftly claimed that he was not informed of the planned release and ordered Shin Bet to investigate the matter.
