Amid the first American presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump hosted by CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, a video clip was widely shared on social media, allegedly showing Joe Biden talking about resignation for medical reasons.
An X user posted the video with the caption, “Breaking Video: Biden Says He May Resign The Presidency For Medical Reasons.”
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
After a reverse image search of the video, Misbar’s team found that the video is outdated and does not show Biden thinking of resigning due to any medical reasons.
The Video of Biden Dates Back to 2020 and Lacks Context
The clip is originally from December 2020 and depicts Biden responding to a reporter’s inquiry about a hypothetical situation in an interview alongside Vice President Kamala Harris. The reporter asked Biden to describe the biggest surprise in working with Harris, Biden responded that he and Harris share the same ethics and thoughts on government. He compared his political relationship with Harris to his experience serving as Barack Obama’s vice president for eight years.
After that, he added the hypothetical situation that has been taken out of context "I told Barack, if I reach something where there's a fundamental disagreement we have based on a moral principle, I will develop some disease and say I have to resign.
Post-Debate Poll: Harris Running Closer to Trump than Biden
In a poll conducted by CNN after Biden’s shaky performance in last week’s debate, 45 percent of registered voters stated that they would support Harris in a hypothetical match-up with Trump. The vice president is only 2 percentage points behind the former president, who received 47 percent support in a head-to-head contest with Harris. Five percent of respondents said they would choose someone else.
On the other hand, Biden trailed Trump by 6 points in the poll. Trump is leading with 49 percent support in a match-up with the president, while Biden received 43 percent support. Another 4 percent said they would vote for someone else.
White House Refutes Reports Biden Is Considering Dropping Out
The White House and Biden’s reelection campaign, refuted a report by The New York Times that indicated the president told an ally he is unsure whether he can salvage his candidacy following his questionable debate performance. The claim went viral on X too.
According to the Times, Biden’s anonymous ally stated that he knows if he has two more events like that, they will be in a different place by the end of the weekend.
In addition, the Times quoted one of Biden's top advisors anonymously, who said the president is "well aware of the political challenge he faces."
Later on Wednesday, CNN reported that President Joe Biden has privately acknowledged similar statements to an ally. "He sees the moment. He's clear-eyed," that ally told CNN.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre affirmed during a briefing Wednesday afternoon that Biden is "absolutely not" considering stepping down.
Moreover, the White House Spokesperson Andrew stated in a post on X platform, regarding the Time’s report that “this claim is absolutely false and if we had been given more than 7 minutes we could have communicated this before it was publicized.”
