The Claim

Mayar Hamida (9 years old) and Bilal Hamida (6 years old) were killed by Israel along with their mother and grandmother at Al-Jaoni UN school in Al-Nuseirat refugee camp today.

Emerging story

Following the Israeli attack on UNRWA's Al-Jaouni school on July 6, social media users widely circulated a photo purporting to show two siblings who had been killed in the school.

The Palestinian Quds News Network shared the photo of the two children, under the caption, "Mayar Hamida (9 years old) and Bilal Hamida (6 years old) were killed by Israel along with their mother and grandmother at Al-Jaoni UN school in Al-Nuseirat refugee camp today."

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral photo and found the claim to be misleading.

Although Israel had killed the two siblings in the photo, earlier reports indicate that the two children were killed older than claimed.

Israel Killed the Two Siblings in October 2023, Not in July 2024

Contrary to social media users’ viral claim, the two Hamida children were not killed in a recent Israeli airstrike targeting Al-Jaouni school on July 6.

Misbar's investigation team conducted searches using the names of the children and found earlier reports indicating that the children were killed in an Israeli assault on October 22, 2023.

A Palestinian media agency published a photo of Mayar Hamida, reporting that she was killed along with her brother Bilal and their mother after Israel bombed their house in the Gaza Strip. The agency stated that they were killed on October 22, 2023.

Misbar’s investigative team also found a published photo from October 22, 2023, showing a tweet from a friend of Nidal Hamida, the father of the two siblings. In the photo, Nidal Hamida is seen sitting in front of the bodies of his wife Fatima, his son Bilal, and his daughter Mayar, who were killed in their home while he was working as a news producer for the Palestine Today channel, according to the post’s description.

Gaza Martyrs, a Palestinian X account dedicated to sharing stories of Gaza martyrs, posted another photo of the two siblings. The account commented that Mayar dreamed of becoming a journalist like her father before the Israeli occupying forces killed her along with her brother. It further mentioned that Bilal was a loving child who was very attached to his sister Mayar and always played together.

The source also confirmed that they were killed on October 22, 2023.

Misbar’s team also found an article published by the Palestinian Information Center in November 2023, about Mayar Hamida, under the translated title, “Mayar.. An incomplete journalistic project that was bombed by the brutality of the treacherous occupation.”

Israel Killed Over 15,000 Gazan Children Since October 7

As of June 12, 2024, Gaza’s government reports that 15,694 children have been killed and 17,000 are now without parents.
Up to 21,000 children are estimated to be missing in the chaos, with many trapped beneath rubble, detained, buried in unmarked graves, or separated from their families, according to Save the Children.

The agency's child protection teams have noted that the latest displacements caused by the offensive in Rafah have separated more children and further increased the strain on families and communities caring for them.

In June 2024, the head of the U.N. agency supporting Palestinian refugees reported that ten children per day are losing one or both of their legs due to Israel's war on Gaza.

Israel’s Genocidal War on Gaza Killed Over 38,200 Gazan People

At least 38,295 individuals have been killed and 88,241 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7.

The Israeli army has ordered all Palestinian civilians to leave Gaza City as it strikes UNRWA’s headquarters there. This follows an attack on a school housing displaced civilians in Khan Yunis, where at least 27 people were killed and 53 injured.
