2000 Photo of Israeli Tank Left Behind in South Lebanon Resurfaces Online
Contrary to social media users’ viral claim, the image is not recent and was not shot in Palestine.
The image dates back to 2000 and depicts a woman using an Israeli tank that was left over in Lebanon after the IOF pulled back to the international border line, ending a 22-year occupation of south Lebanon.
The image was published in a report on the website of the war-zone correspondent and political analyst of the events in the Middle East and North Africa Elijah J. Magnier, titled "20 Years After the Unconditional Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon: Where Are We? The report attributed the attached photo to Younes Zaatari, with a description indicating that it was taken in southern Lebanon in 2000.
The photo was published on X, via a similar name “Younes Al-Zaatari” with a description that reads “A photo taken by my father took of a woman mocking the Israeli arrogance in Southern Lebanon. I remember this photo and the taste of the Lebanese meat pie that was served by the old woman.”
U.N. Warns of Tension Escalation on the Lebanese-Israeli Border
The United Nations expressed grave concerns on Friday about intensified clashes along the Lebanon-Israel frontier, known as the Blue Line. This recent surge in hostilities, which occurred on Thursday, "heightens the risk of a full-scale war," according to a note from the office of the spokesperson for the U.N. secretary-general. The note underscored the necessity of restraint, noting, "Escalation can and must be avoided. We reiterate that the danger of miscalculation leading to a sudden and wider conflagration is real," and emphasized that "a political and diplomatic solution is the only viable way forward."
The U.N. note also reiterated calls from the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a renewed commitment to Security Council resolution 1701, which was adopted in August 2006 to seek a full cessation of hostilities shortly after a month of deadly warfare between Israel and Hezbollah ended with a fragile truce.
