A "Sam Hyde is the shooter" Meme Spread Misinformation in Shooting Incidents

Misbar's team found that the image features the comedian known as Sam Hyde, and the meme associating Sam Hyde, has been mistakenly linked to multiple mass shooting incidents predating 2016. 

As reported by The New York Times in 2017, a United States congressman fell for a persistent deception by mistakenly informing CNN that the perpetrator behind the tragic killing of 26 Texas church attendees, including a pregnant woman and multiple children, was identified as Sam Hyde.

Shortly after the statement by Representative Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, the actual gunman, Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, a former member of the Air Force, was correctly identified.

Sam Hyde is a legitimate individual, a comedian known for humor with strong right-leaning political themes. Over the past few years, his name has been erroneously linked by anonymous online accounts to various mass shootings, leading to the emergence of the meme "Sam Hyde is the shooter."

Identified Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks Killed After Attack On Former U.S. President Trump

Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, has been identified by the FBI as the individual linked to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The FBI issued a statement early Sunday morning disclosing Crooks as a resident of Bethel Park, located approximately 35 miles south of the rally site. Crooks, who was shot and killed by Secret Service agents after firing upon Trump from a building rooftop outside the event's security perimeter, left one individual dead and two others in critical condition. Witnesses recounted a scene of chaos and bloodshed, with efforts made to provide medical aid amidst a dense crowd. Trump, sustaining a gunshot wound to his ear, confirmed his well-being on social media, although his campaign reiterated his overall health as he returned to Newark, New Jersey, later on Saturday night.

President Biden Condemns Political Violence

President Joe Biden delivered a strong denouncement of political violence on Sunday, urging the nation to reject extremism and anger in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. 

In a televised address from the Oval Office, Biden emphasized the importance of national unity, cautioning against the escalating political rhetoric leading up to the November presidential election. He stressed that violence, in any form, should not be tolerated or normalized in America. 

Meanwhile, Trump expressed his intention to promote unity in his upcoming speech at the Republican National Convention, acknowledging the gravity of the recent events. Biden has initiated an independent investigation into the security breach that allowed a gunman to shoot at Trump from a rooftop during the rally, with the FBI noting a surge in online threats of political violence post-incident.
