The fire destroyed stained-glass windows as confirmed by officials. Authorities stated that three separate fires were intentionally set at the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral, leading to an investigation into the incident as a criminal act.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after several hours, but smoke continued to emerge from the Gothic structure into Saturday morning. This event occurred just over a year after a massive fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which resulted in the loss of its roof and main spire.

Fire Engulfed the Spire of Rouen Cathedral

The circulation of the claim came after a fire ignited in the spire of the cathedral located in the French city of Rouen during Thursday morning. The incident took place at the pinnacle of the gothic Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in Rouen, situated in the northern area of Normandy. Visuals shared by Normandy's prefecture depicted smoke emanating from the apex of the structure, which is presently undergoing restoration and is recognized as a significant piece of medieval architecture in France.

According to the prefecture's announcement, the cathedral was evacuated once the flames emerged, and emergency services promptly responded to the scene. Over 70 firefighters and 40 vehicles were dispatched to the site, with additional firefighting units from the neighboring Oise region also mobilized. The construction of Rouen Cathedral dates back to the 12th century, undergoing multiple rebuilding phases over an 800-year span. Renowned for its three distinct towers constructed in different styles, the cathedral was immortalized in a series of paintings by French impressionist Claude Monet during the 19th century.

Firefighters successfully put out a fire at the historic cathedral on Thursday, much to the relief of residents who had been concerned upon witnessing dark smoke billowing from its spire. The flames were officially extinguished at 12:30 p.m. GMT, as confirmed by local fire officials.
