Netanyahu Addresses U.S. Congress Amid Protests Over Gaza War

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made his fourth address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress, seeking to maintain support for Israel's war on Gaza. However, his arrival on Capitol Hill on Wednesday was met with protests, which continued within the Congress. Representative Rashida Tlaib, for example, displayed a sign with the words "guilty of genocide" on one side and "war criminal" on the other, reflecting widespread criticism concerning the war's devastating impact.

Alarming Reports of Detainee Deaths and High Numbers of Prisoners Amid Israeli Aggression

The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS), and the Addameer Foundation for Prisoner Care and Human Rights have reported that at least 18 detainees have died in Israeli occupation jails since October 7. They stated that numerous detainees from the Gaza Strip have also lost their lives in these facilities, and to date, the occupation has not revealed their identities or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

In a joint statement, the organizations confirmed that Israeli forces have withheld the bodies of at least 16 detainees since the onset of hostilities in Gaza. They emphasized that this information does not account for the total number of detentions from Gaza, noting that Israeli authorities acknowledged the detention of approximately 4,000 individuals from the region, of which hundreds have been released, while many workers from Gaza in the West Bank were also detained.

As of early July 2024, the organizations reported that the total number of detainees in Israeli prisons reached about 9,700, including 3,380 held under administrative detention. They highlighted that there are currently 86 female detainees in Damoun prison, which includes one pregnant woman, and at least 23 women under administrative detention, while there are at least 250 minors among the detainees.

Since the escalation of Israeli aggression against Gaza, more than 7,500 administrative detention orders have been issued, encompassing both new and renewal orders affecting children and women.
