Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The image is old and does not depict protesters storming the residence of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed on August 5.
Protesters Storm Sri Lanka Presidential Palace in 2022
The image, published in July 2022, shows protesters storming the presidential palace in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Reuters included this image in a report with other photos documenting the takeover of the presidential palace on July 10, 2022.
Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Flees the Country
Media reports said that former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the presidential palace using a military aircraft bound for the Maldives, just before protesters arrived, stormed the palace, and took control.
Reports at the time noted that Rajapaksa sent his resignation letter to the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament via email on July 14, 2022. The resignation was officially accepted by Parliament, leading Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to assume the presidency in an acting capacity until new elections could be held.
In 2022, Sri Lanka experienced a series of protests against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government, triggered by an economic crisis that led to soaring inflation, frequent power outages, and fuel shortages.
Protesters Storm Office of Prime Minister of Bangladesh
The claim follows an incident where protesters stormed the official residence of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed on August 5, amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
Media outlets have released several videos documenting the breach of the presidential palace in Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s Resignation
Following the escalation of protests in Bangladesh, which began in response to the quota system and evolved into a movement demanding the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced in a televised address the resignation of Sheikh Hasina and the formation of a transitional government. He urged the public to trust the army and return to peaceful methods.
Media reports say Hasina landed at Hindon Air Force Station near Delhi and is expected to travel to London later.
The protests, which began in June, have resulted in about 250 deaths and thousands of injuries.
