Emerging story
Recently, a video has gone viral on social media platform X, purporting to show Spain breaking the record for the largest pro-Palestinian demonstration ever held.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The gathering shown in the video was actually from the opening of the annual San Fermín bull-running festival on July 6 in Pamplona, northeastern Spain.
Video From San Fermín Festival Opening
In early July, users shared the same footage from different angles, correctly identifying it as the opening ceremony of the 2024 San Fermín bull-running festival.
Spanish media outlets also published the footage from various angles on July 6, 2024, confirming it was from the festival's opening.
Misbar reviewed the live broadcast of the opening ceremony on the festival's official YouTube channel and confirmed that the scenes and sound are identical.
San Fermín Festival Participants Raise Palestinian Flags
The claim gained traction after footage and photos from the 2024 San Fermín festival showed participants raising Palestinian flags. Some flags were visible among the crowds in Pamplona's Town Hall Square, while others were hung from balconies overlooking the festival's opening parade. One photo even showed an Israeli flag crossed out with a red ribbon.
On July 11, the sixth day of the festival, members of celebratory groups known as Las Peñas organized a demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The march began at San Francisco Square, led by a banner reading 'Free Palestine' and a large Palestinian flag. It proceeded through the old town's streets, attracting more participants along the way, and concluded at the bullring, where some demonstrators entered the stands and waved dozens of Palestinian flags.
The San Fermín Festival
It is an annual celebration hosted by the Spanish city of Pamplona from midday on July 6 to midnight on July 14 each year, in honor of the city's first bishop, Saint Fermín. The festival's most famous event, the bull run, occurs daily from the second day through the last. During this event, bulls are released to charge through the city’s streets toward the bullring.
The event gained worldwide fame through American writer Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises, published in 1926.
