U.S. Urges Turkey and Allies to Encourage Iran to Reduce Middle Eastern Tensions

The United States is urging Turkey and its other allies with connections to Iran to persuade the nation to ease tensions in the Middle East, according to U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Jeff Flake. His remarks come amid fears of potential attacks by Iran and its affiliates following the elimination of key figures from Hamas and Hezbollah.

"We request all our allies with any relationship with Iran to encourage de-escalation, including Turkey," Flake stated during a round-table discussion with journalists in Istanbul as his tenure in Turkey concludes. U.S.-Turkey relations have faced challenges in recent years, primarily due to the U.S. partnership with Syrian Kurds, which Turkey views as terrorists, and Turkey’s acquisition of Russian S-400 defense systems, leading to U.S. sanctions and withdrawal from the F-35 jet programme. Nevertheless, Flake expressed optimism, noting that U.S.-Turkey relations are currently "in a better place than we've been in a while."
