The Second Intifada

The Second Intifada, also known by Palestinians as the al-Aqsa Intifada, was triggered on September 28, 2000, when then-Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem with over 1,000 heavily armed police and soldiers. This provocative act ignited widespread anger among Palestinians.

During the Second Intifada, at least 4,973 Palestinians lost their lives, including 1,262 children, 274 women, and 32 medical personnel, as reported by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. In addition, more than 10,000 children were injured during the five years of the uprising, according to Defence for Children International, a Swiss-based organization committed to protecting children's rights.

Hamas Claims Responsibility for the Suicide Bombing

Hamas has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv on Sunday night, which Israeli authorities report killed the suspected attacker and injured a civilian. In a statement, the armed group described the incident as a “martyrdom operation” conducted in collaboration with Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Hamas also issued a warning that suicide attacks would return to the forefront if Israel continued massacres of Palestinians.

Israel’s police force and the Shin Bet domestic security service confirmed that the explosion occurred, involving a powerful explosive device. The blast occurred on Lehi Street in southern Tel Aviv, approximately an hour after the U.S. Secretary of State arrived in the city to advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage release agreement. CCTV footage from moments before the explosion showed a middle-aged man walking past a shop carrying a full backpack.
