Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating an image claiming to show that Houthis targeted an American aircraft carrier, which is reportedly on the verge of sinking due to a significant fire that has erupted on board.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating image and found the claim to be fake.
Misbar's team found that the image is AI-generated.
A content analysis conducted on the 'Hive Moderation' site indicates a 99.8% likelihood that the image is AI-generated.
Upon closer examination of the image and comparing it to photographs of U.S. aircraft carriers, it is evident that the island—the structure situated atop the flight deck where officers manage flight and ship operations—is significantly larger and disproportionate to the size of the carrier depicted in the image. This discrepancy further supports the conclusion that the image is not an authentic representation of a U.S. aircraft carrier.
U.N. Condemns Houthis' Seizure of Human Rights Office in Sanaa
The United Nations has condemned the Houthis' recent takeover of its Human Rights Office in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. Earlier this month, Houthi forces stormed the office, confiscating documents, furniture, and vehicles, as reported by a senior U.N. official on Tuesday. This incident is part of a broader trend of suppression by the Iran-aligned group against the U.N., humanitarian organizations, and foreign embassies, coinciding with its campaign concerning Israel's war on Gaza, which has included targeting vessels in the Red Sea. The office seizure occurred on August 3, with local U.N. staff being compelled to surrender their belongings and documents, as stated by U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.
Turk urged that "Ansar Allah forces must vacate the premises and return all assets and belongings immediately." Following the crackdown on foreign entities in June, the U.N.'s Human Rights Office announced the suspension of its operations in Houthi-controlled areas, including Sanaa and much of northern Yemen. However, it continues to function in regions governed by the internationally recognized government, which is supported by a Saudi-led coalition and has conflicted with the Houthis for control of Yemen since 2014.
In June, the Houthis detained over 60 individuals collaborating with the U.N. and other NGOs, asserting that they had arrested members of an "American Israeli spy network." The group released videos of ten Yemeni individuals, including a U.N. Human Rights Office worker, who allegedly confessed to being recruited by the U.S. Embassy; the U.N. has claimed these confessions were obtained under coercion.
Israeli Airstrike in Southern Lebanon Claims Ten Lives, Sparks Hezbollah Retaliation
An Israeli airstrike in Nabatiyeh, southern Lebanon, has resulted in the deaths of at least ten people, all of whom were Syrian nationals, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Among the deceased are a woman and her two children. The strike also left at least five others injured, two of whom are in critical condition, including three Syrians, one Sudanese, and one Lebanese. The ministry reported that two of the injured Syrians are currently undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital.
The Israeli military confirmed that the strike targeted a Hezbollah weapons storage facility in the Nabatiyeh area overnight. This incident marks one of the highest death tolls in southern Lebanon since the onset of Israel's military operations in Gaza, which began after the Hamas attacks on October 7, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities.
A 14-year-old boy named Mohamed recounted witnessing a missile hit a nearby warehouse just as he was about to go to sleep. He told CNN that rescuers worked through the night to recover bodies from the rubble, describing the grim discovery of a decapitated body and a severed arm.
Mohamed noted the constant presence of drones overhead, stating, “They are always flying over here 24/7; sometimes they fly so low you can see them.”
Haitham, a Syrian national working at a nearby company, reflected on the victims, saying, “They escaped one war and got killed in another.” In retaliation for the airstrike, Iran-backed Hezbollah militants launched a series of rockets toward Ayelet Hashahar in northern Israel, as confirmed in a statement from the group.
