Emerging story
Following the news of protests near the Democratic National Convention, a photo showing pallets of bricks circulated on X claiming that it is from Chicago preparing for protests near the Democratic National Convention.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the widely shared claim and found it to be misleading. The photo is old, was not taken in Chicago, and has no relation to the Democratic National Convention.
Bricks In Dallas During George Floyd Protests
Through reverse image search, Misbar’s team found that the photo dates back to 2020.
In an article published in June 2020, The Sun magazine reported on several pallets of bricks appearing in the U.S. during protests in 2020 in response to the killing of George Floyd, a black man who was killed after a white police officer knelt on his neck during an arrest in Minneapolis in May 2020. The Sun’s article reported on theories that these pallets of bricks were planted by cops or extremists to fuel violence.
The viral image was included in the article. The photo of the bricks was posted by a Facebook user saying that it was taken in Dallas, Texas.
The photo was also published by some social media users, confirming that it was taken in Dallas during the time of George Floyd protests.
Misleading Reports On Appearance of Random Bricks In 2020
Several reports of pallets of bricks appeared on social media in 2020 during the George Floyd protests, purporting that the bricks may have been deliberately dropped ahead of the protests to cause violence.
These reports were debunked several times by police officers and news media outlets.
NBC News investigated the reports of the appearance of bricks in a Dallas parking lot and found that the bricks had been there for months, close to a construction site.
A police officer in Frisco, Texas, posted in June 2020 that the police department investigated the reports of the bricks and determined that the bricks were part of a planned HOA construction project. The bricks were removed back then to be returned at a later time.
NBC News investigation concluded that there was no evidence that pallets of bricks were strategically placed in U.S. cities to encourage protest violence.
Protests Near the Democratic National Convention
Thousands of protesters took to the streets near the Democratic National Convention on its opening day, demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the U.S. support for Israel.
Although the protests were described as peaceful, several demonstrators were arrested as they broke through a security fence around the Chicago venue.
Slogans like, “No justice, no peace, U.S. out of the Middle East,” and “Kamala Harris is a cop, all this violence has to stop,” were chanted as they referred to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and to the vice-president’s career as a prosecutor and California attorney general.
In his primetime convention farewell speech in the evening, U.S. President Joe Biden admitted that the protesters had a point, adding, “A lot of innocent people are being killed, on both sides.”
Since October 7, around 40,223 were killed in the Gaza Strip, mostly civilians, and 1,139 were killed in Israel.
