Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating a video claiming to depict a fire in Kiryat Shmona following the recent Hezbollah attack on Israel.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The video is old and dates back to 2023, not showing a fire in Kiryat Shmona following the recent Hezbollah attack on Israel on Sunday, August 24.
Fire in Tel Aviv in December 2023
Israeli media published the video in December 2023, claiming it showed a massive fire at the Galuyot Kibbutz industrial complex in central Tel Aviv.
According to Israeli sources, the fire started after midnight at the Galuyot Kibbutz complex, with smoke rising from a shoe store and a showroom on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv. Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze.
Hezbollah Launches Attack on Israel
The claim began circulating after Hezbollah launched a major aerial attack on Israel today, Sunday, using numerous drones and missiles aimed at deep inside Israeli territory. In response, the Israeli military announced it had carried out extensive strikes in southern Lebanon to thwart what it described as a "large-scale" attack by Hezbollah.
Hezbollah stated in a release that the aerial assault targeted a significant Israeli military objective, which will be announced later. The group added that the attack is part of their "initial response to the martyrdom of Commander Fouad Shukr."
Hezbollah confirmed that several enemy positions, military installations, and Iron Dome batteries in northern occupied Palestine were struck with a large number of rockets. They also noted that their operations would take time, and a detailed statement about their progress and objectives would be issued later.
Israeli Army Launches Airstrikes on Southern Lebanon
The Israeli army reported that it targeted "objectives" in Lebanon after determining that Hezbollah was preparing to launch rockets and shells toward Israel. Israeli Army spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated early Sunday that "a short time ago, the Israeli army identified the terrorist organization Hezbollah preparing to launch rockets toward Israeli territory."
Meanwhile, Hezbollah announced the launch of over 320 Katyusha rockets at Israeli military sites and positions. Hezbollah claimed that its attacks struck and damaged 11 bases and military posts in northern occupied Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights. Hezbollah also declared that it had completed the "first phase" of its response to the assassination of Shukr.
