According to an article published by RFE, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) reported on August 5 that a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military base in the Rostov region resulted in the destruction of at least one Russian warplane and ammunition storage facilities. HUR indicated in a Telegram statement that space intelligence data revealed a Su-34 fighter-bomber was damaged by fire at the Morozovsk military airfield on August 3. Additionally, satellite images suggested that two more Su-34 aircraft were likely affected by the explosion at the ammunition depot.

State of Emergency Declared in Voronezh Region Following Drone Attack

Russia has announced a state of emergency in certain areas of the Voronezh region near the Ukrainian border after a drone attack overnight, as reported by local governor Alexander Gusev on his Telegram channel.

Gusev mentioned that Russian forces intercepted five drones; however, debris from the interception caused a fire that triggered the explosion of munitions. No civilian structures were harmed, but the incident led authorities to implement emergency measures in three communities within the Ostrogozhsky district and evacuate 200 residents.

Russia and Ukraine Conduct Prisoner Exchange with UAE's Mediation

Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 115 prisoners of war from each side, facilitated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) acting as an intermediary. This marks the first exchange since Ukraine launched a surprise attack in Russia’s Kursk region on August 6, the largest assault on Russian territory by a foreign power since World War II. The exchange coincided with Ukraine's celebration of 33 years of independence, commemorating its break from the Soviet Union led by Moscow.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the servicemen exchanged were captured in the Kursk region. The released Russian soldiers have now returned to Belarus, where they will receive medical care and rehabilitation before going back to Russia. The ministry expressed thanks to the UAE for its role in the successful swap. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared a photo of the freed Ukrainian prisoners wrapped in the national blue and yellow flags and embracing one another, noting that the returned individuals included members from the border guards, national guard, navy, and armed forces.

Zelenskiy also acknowledged the Ukrainian troops who played a vital role in increasing the number of prisoners available for exchange. Kyiv has reported establishing a buffer zone in an area that Russia had previously used to launch attacks on Ukrainian targets. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s commissioner for human rights, mentioned that 82 of the returned Ukrainians had defended the port of Mariupol in 2022.

The UAE foreign ministry confirmed its involvement in facilitating the exchange, stating that the total number of captives exchanged through its mediation efforts has now reached 1,788. This marks the seventh prisoner exchange mediated by the UAE since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with an Emirati official previously announcing that further swaps were planned.
