Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating footage and found the claim to be misleading.

A reverse image search found the video circulating online to be unrelated to the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.

2013 Video of Scores of Syrian Martyrs in a Chemical Weapon Attack

Contrary to the claim circulating on social media, the video making the rounds is outdated and unrelated to Gaza or Palestine. As indicated by the watermark, the original footage was recorded in Western Ghouta, Syria, on August 21, 2013.

Misbar’s team investigated the original video and found it uploaded on an Instagram account dedicated to archiving incidents from the Syrian Revolution.

The account posted the video a few days ago, stating that it shows “simple shots of some of the martyrs who died on this day, August 21, 2013, in the Damascus countryside after the Syrian regime targeted Eastern and Western Ghouta with chemical weapons.”

Scores Killed in Chemical Attacks in Syria in 2013

On August 21, 2013, the Syrian regime launched a barbaric attack on the towns of Zamalka, Ein Tarma, and Irbin in the Ghouta countryside. According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), these attacks resulted in the deaths of 1,127 people, with nearly 6,000 others suffering from suffocation and respiratory issues.

The SNHR stated that the gassing of people in their sleep indicates the attacks were “premeditated and deliberate.”

The SNHR referred to the 2013 Ghouta attacks as “the largest chemical weapon attack in the modern age” and emphasized that the al-Assad regime continues to act with impunity. The organization has called on the United Nations to impose economic, political, and military sanctions on the Syrian government.

According to SNHR, there were 222 chemical weapon attacks in Syria from the first recorded use on December 23, 2012, through August 20, 2023. Approximately 98 percent of these attacks were carried out by Syrian regime forces, with the remaining 2 percent attributed to ISIS (ISIL).

The Syrian Civil War Is Ongoing for Over a Decade

As Syria's conflict enters its thirteenth year, analysts note that a lasting political resolution for the war-torn nation remains out of reach.

In 2011, a protest movement against the Assad regime quickly escalated into a civil war that has claimed the lives of over 300,000 people and displaced more than 13 million, both within the country and abroad, according to the United Nations. Other war monitors, such as the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, estimate the death toll to be closer to 500,000.

Israel's Military Kills Over 40,000 Palestinians, Including 17,000 Children

Israeli barbaric attacks have claimed the lives of over 40,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since October 7. Among them are nearly 17,000 children, accounting for 2.6 percent of all children in Gaza. Every day since October 7, at least 53 children and 72 adults have been killed by Israeli strikes.

Furthermore, at least 10,000 people remain missing under the rubble, most of whom are presumed dead. Of the 40,000 fatalities, 18.4 percent are women, and 33 percent are children.
