Emerging story
Social media users imitated claims by American politician Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and X owner Elon Musk, who recently shared a video that allegedly shows Vice President Kamala Harris suggesting she would shut down X if elected in the 2024 presidential election, claiming that Musk has “lost his privileges.”
Democratic politician Kennedy Jr. reshared the video, and commented: "Kamala Harris: "He [Musk] has lost his privileges." Can someone please explain to her that freedom of speech is a RIGHT, not a "privilege"? Kamala Harris: "There has to be a responsibility placed on these social media sites to understand their power."
Elon Musk commented on Kennedy’s post, which the two shared, stating, “This is what she actually believes. Free speech is the bedrock of democracy, and the Democratic Party (Kamala is just a puppet) wants to destroy it.”
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the viral footage and found the claim to be misleading.
After conducting a thorough reverse image search, Misbar’s team found the video to be old and unrelated to Harris’ comment on Elon Musk.
Outdated Video of Harris Referring to Donald Trump, Not Elon Musk
Contrary to Democratic politician Kennedy and X owner Elon Musk, the video is not recent and was taken out of context.
Misbar’s investigative team traced the original video back to October 2019, prior to Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter—now X—when then-Senator Kamala Harris was referencing Donald Trump, stating, [Trump] "has lost his privileges and [his Twitter account] should be taken down.... [Social media sites] are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of oversight or regulation. And that has to stop."
The original video was uploaded by The Hill on X on October 16, 2019.
Moreover, Misbar's investigative team found the transcript of a CNN interview in which Kamala Harris spoke with host Jake Tapper following a Democratic primary debate. During the discussion, she addressed whether then-President Donald Trump’s profile should be removed from the platform, then known as Twitter, and emphasized the need for increased accountability among social media companies.
The transcript includes Kamala Harris stating, "[Trump] has lost his privileges and it should be taken down. The bottom line is that you can't say that you have one rule for Facebook and a different rule for Twitter. The same rule has to apply, which is that there has to be a responsibility placed on these social media sites to understand their power. They are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of oversight or regulation, and that has to stop."
The CNN host refers to Donald Trump immediately after Harris: "He is the president of the United States, and I would -- you know, you might argue, first of all, he doesn't --"
Elon Musk’s Frequent Attacks on Kamala Harris
Elon Musk’s disdain for the Democratic Party has always been obvious, but in recent weeks, his commentary on the upcoming U.S. presidential election and his attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris have escalated, aided by a controversial use of emerging artificial intelligence technology.
On Monday, Musk shared an AI-generated image on his social media platform depicting Harris as a communist, complete with a red uniform and a hat featuring a hammer and sickle.
Elon Musk, who has endorsed former President Donald Trump and invested millions in a superPAC supporting Republican candidates, is amplifying disinformation and misogynistic narratives. This approach promotes radical content to a broader audience that might otherwise remain hidden in the darker corners of the internet.
Robert F Kennedy Suspends Campaign and Backs Republican Donald Trump
The democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has suspended his campaign and endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump, joining him on stage at a rally in Arizona.
The 70-year-old, who has been a Democrat for most of his life and is a member of the Kennedy dynasty, stated that the principles that led him to leave the party now compel him to support Trump.
During a press conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Kennedy announced his intention to withdraw his name from the ballot in ten battleground states. At the Glendale rally, Trump praised Kennedy as "phenomenal" and "brilliant." Kennedy's endorsement of a Republican candidate has sparked outrage among his relatives.
