Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been sharing a video that claims to depict the Israeli occupation planting a bomb in a Palestinian's body and detonating it during a funeral procession.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading.
The Video Shows a Car Bomb Explosion During a Funeral in Zamalka
Misbar's team found that the video originates from Syria in June 2012. A YouTube channel named ShaamNetwork posted one of the scenes of the claim back in June 30, 2012. The video shows an explosion occurring among mourners in Zamalka, Damascus.
Many news agencies, including NBC News, reported the same footage in July 2012, indicating that it documents an explosion during a funeral procession in Damascus that resulted in the deaths of dozens.
A report from the Los Angeles Times on June 30, 2012, revealed that at least 85 individuals were killed when a car bomb detonated during a funeral procession in the Syrian town of Zamalka. The Local Coordination Committees, which oppose the government, reported the death toll at 85.
Israeli Airstrike in a Humanitarian Zone Claims the Lives of Palestinians in Gaza
An Israeli airstrike targeted a designated humanitarian zone for displaced individuals in southern Gaza, resulting in numerous casualties, according to local officials in the besieged region. Israel stated the operation aimed at Hamas fighters present in the area.
The Gaza Ministry of Health reported that at least 19 bodies were transported to hospitals from the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, with over 60 individuals injured as rescue teams worked to recover victims trapped under rubble and sand.
Mahmoud Al Nims, a resident, recounted the chaos: “People thought they were safely asleep. Suddenly, we were awakened by explosions, surrounded by fires. We had no idea where the strike occurred or where the casualties were; everything was in disarray.”
Footage from CNN at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis depicted men and boys gathered for Islamic funeral prayers on Tuesday, as mourners carried the deceased, including children, wrapped in white shrouds, with women grieving at the hospital's entrance.
The Israel Forces claimed they targeted key Hamas operatives within a command-and-control center located in the humanitarian zone in Khan Younis, a statement that Hamas refuted. The strike hit Al-Mawasi, a coastal area in Khan Younis where many displaced Palestinians sought refuge from Israeli bombardments in other parts of Gaza. These individuals are living in tents with limited access to basic infrastructure and humanitarian aid.
According to Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal, the explosion left three large craters, and rescue teams faced significant challenges in recovering victims, many of whom were believed to be asleep during the strikes due to insufficient resources.
Earlier reports from Gaza’s Civil Defense indicated that 40 individuals had died, though the reason for the differing casualty figures was not immediately clear.
Human rights organizations have consistently condemned Israeli attacks in designated safe areas. On Tuesday, the Norwegian Refugee Council criticized Israeli forces for “forcing Palestinians in Gaza to flee from place to place without providing genuine assurances of safety, adequate accommodation, or a means of return once hostilities cease.”
