Photo of Israeli Coffins Is From a Staged Funeral Representing Hostages Killed in Gaza
The Claim
BREAKING: 22 dead and 74 injured among Israel’s Unit 8200 in Hezbollah’s 25 August retaliation, European security sources tell Al-Mayadeen. Iron dome failed by Hezbollah missiles.
Emerging story
Amid the recent Israeli military attacks in Gaza and Lebanon, social media users widely spread a photo alleging to show several coffins of Israeli soldiers.
Several X users have associated the photo with the recent Hezbollah rocket strikes on Israel, claiming it reflects the failure of Israel's Iron Dome defense system. An X user shared the photo along with the caption, "BREAKING: 22 dead and 74 injured among Israel’s Unit 8200 in Hezbollah’s 25 August retaliation, European security sources tell Al-Mayadeen. Iron dome failed by Hezbollah missiles."
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photo and found the claim to be misleading.
A thorough reverse image search found that the widely circulated photo is from a recent protest in Tel Aviv, unrelated to the current military actions.
Israeli Protesters Carry Coffins During Protest in Tel Aviv
Contrary to the viral claim circulating on social media, the photo does not depict real coffins of Israeli soldiers amid the ongoing military campaigns. Similar images, showing the same location and individuals, were posted by The Jerusalem Post on X, identifying the scene as a protest at Habima Square in Tel Aviv.
Misbar’s investigative team conducted a thorough comparison of the circulating image with the one shared by Israeli media and confirmed several similarities, including protesters wearing yellow, holding photos of Israeli hostages, the Israeli flag, objects on the building roof, and the presence of 27 coffins, arranged in three rows of nine.
Sky News also shared a video showing Israeli protesters carrying coffins, reporting that the coffins represent hostages killed in Gaza. The outlet noted that widespread protests erupted across Israel following the recovery of six hostages' bodies from Gaza.
Moreover, The Times of Israel shared a similar photo of the circulating photo showing the same location and number of coffins during the protest in Habima Square, Tel Aviv.
Israeli Protesters Staged Mock Funeral for Dead Hostages
Thousands of protesters marched to the IOF headquarters in Tel Aviv on September 5, carrying 27 symbolic coffins representing the captives allegedly killed in Gaza.
This marked the fifth consecutive night of protests following the discovery of six hostages’ bodies in Gaza. Demonstrators gathered not only in Tel Aviv but also in cities like Rehovot, Eilat, and Jerusalem, demanding urgent negotiations to secure the release of remaining hostages.
The protests erupted after the bodies of six Israeli hostages, nearly 11 months after their abduction during Hamas's October 7 Operation. Outrage over the hostages’ execution has fueled criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with accusations that he failed to pursue negotiations with Hamas, which may have led to their release but could have endangered his political standing.
Israel Recovers Bodies of Six Captives Held in Gaza Since October 7
Israel’s military has announced the recovery of the bodies of six captives, among approximately 250 held, following the Palestinian Resistance operation. Among the recovered was a dual U.S. national. Their remains were found in an underground tunnel in Rafah, southern Gaza, and formally identified after being returned to Israel. The military claimed that the captives were killed shortly before their recovery.
However, senior Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq refuted the claim, stating that the captives were killed in Israeli airstrikes. Al-Risheq also accused the United States of supporting and partnering with Israel in its 11-month assault on Gaza.
Recent Updates of the Israeli Barbaric War on Gaza
Since October 7, Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 41,182 people and left 95,280 others wounded.
The Israeli army has issued new evacuation orders for thousands of Palestinians in three areas of the northern Gaza Strip, indicating a possible ground assault.
The Palestinian Civil Defence has reported that at least five people were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Shuhada al-Zeitoun School in Gaza City.
