This Video Does Not Depict a Fire Caused by an Israeli Strike on Lebanon

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The video shows a fire at a landfill in Beirut, not a fire caused by an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon.

Fire Engulfs Landfill in Beirut

The video was posted on September 12 as showing a fire at the Bourj Hammoud landfill, one of the two main landfills receiving waste from the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Moreover, Misbar found videos filmed from other angles, which were shared by Lebanese media as part of their coverage of the landfill fire.

Crisis at the Bourj Hammoud Landfill in Lebanon

The areas surrounding the Bourj Hammoud landfill face environmental and health risks due to the accumulation of waste or its incineration. The odors emitted from the landfill increase the risk of respiratory diseases and other health issues.

In 2019, Human Rights Watch published a report stating that the landfill would reach its maximum capacity by the end of that year. The organization urged the Lebanese government to secure alternative sites for waste disposal rather than expanding the landfill.

Rising Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah

The claim circulated following the Israeli Air Force's launch of dozens of airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Thursday. The Israeli army announced it had begun extensive operations against areas in southern Lebanon, resembling a fire belt. Earlier that day, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant stated that "the war with Hezbollah has entered a new phase."

In response, Hezbollah announced it had carried out 17 attacks on Israeli border settlements on Thursday, including a site in Metula, northern Israel.
