The Claim

Emerging story

In the aftermath of the first round of the explosions of Pager devices in Lebanon, a claim went viral on X that The hospital of the American University in Beirut took all Pagers of its nurses and doctors about 10 days ago, and “replaced them due to technical issues.”

Some users who shared this claim shared a screenshot of an email allegedly from the American University in Beirut sent to its staff. The university, in the email, informs the staff of the changes in the communication system, but the alleged email was used as proof to support the claim.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be misleading. The AUBMC did not have prior notice of the attack.

AUBMC Categorically Refuted Allegations Of Deliberately Replacing Pager Devices Before The Attack

Misbar’s team did not find any evidence that the American University of Beirut Medical Center had any advance knowledge of the attack. The alleged screenshot of the email that users shared as proof also did not refer to a possible Pager attack or anything of the same meaning.

Just some hours after the spreading of the claim, the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) posted on its accounts on Facebook and X a post debunking these baseless claims.

The AUBMC described these claims as “rumors and conspiracy theories” and “baseless allegations” attempting to link the university to the tragic event. The university clarified that the communication system was upgraded in the university in April 2024 and the switching which was called the Go-Live took place on August 29, 2024, which explains that the email shared by users to support the claim was just to notify the staff of the changes. The changes were due to the devices and systems that became obsolete in the AUBMC.

At the end of its statement, the AUBMC denounced these misleading claims saying that the center had received over 160 serious injuries three hours after the attack that happened on September 17 adding this should be a time when all shall rally to support the center and not to spread baseless rumors.

According to the latest states by the AUBMC, the medical center has received over 190 patients and is unable to receive additional casualties as of September 17.

The Pager Attack Is An Israeli All-Out Offensive Against Hezbollah

The claim began circulating after the first round of the pager attack that took place on September 17, which killed at least 12 and injured nearly 3000. On the following day, a second round of explosions in the pager devices took place resulting in killing at least 32.

Commenting on the attacks, unnamed U.S. and Israeli officials told Axios that the pager attacks were planned as the opening move in an “all-out” offensive against Hezbollah. According to Axios, the attacks were set off early as Israel was concerned that Hezbollah might have become aware of the plan.

More Than 100 Rocketed Were Fired From Lebanon, Says The IOF

Dozens of rockets were fired at Israel’s Ramat David Airbase, east of Haifa, in response to a series of Israeli attacks.

According to the Israeli military, more than 100 projectiles were fired in the morning of Sunday from Lebanon. Accordingly, a lot of schools in Israel were closed and offices were empty.

The U.N. fears that the latest violence between Israel and Lebanon could lead to an “imminent catastrophe” in the Middle East, stating that no military solution will make either side safer.
