Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating a video claiming to show Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, in his initial response to the pager explosions in Lebanon.
The video shows Nasrallah ,alongside an image of a pager, with subtitles purportedly translating his comments about an explosion attack linked to the device.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading. The video is old and does not show the Hassan Nasrallah response to the pager explosions.
Misbar's team found that the video originates from August 1, 2024, and features a speech by Hassan Nasrallah in response to the assassination of party leader Fouad Shukr in an Israeli raid.
Upon thorough examination of the video in question and a comparison with the original footage, it has been determined that the image of the pager was inserted above the image of Fouad Shukr, accompanied by an identical caption beneath.
It is also important to note that the translation accompanying the video in the claim is inaccurate and contains elements of sarcasm. In his speech, Nasrallah talked about the resistance and articulated how they would respond to the assassination of Fouad Shukr.
Death of Senior Commander Fuad Shukr in Israeli Airstrike
On July 31, 2024, Hezbollah announced the death of one of its senior military commanders, Fuad Shukr, as a result of an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon's capital. The Iran-backed organization reported that Shukr's remains were recovered from the debris of a targeted building. Additionally, the airstrike claimed the lives of four other individuals, including two children. Fuad Shukr, who was in his early sixties, is regarded as a vital military adviser to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Explosions of Walkie-Talkies in Lebanon Result in Fatalities and Injuries
The circulation of the claim came after at least 37 individuals lost their lives and more than 3000 sustained injuries when multiple walkie-talkies detonated in Lebanon on Wednesday. This incident occurred a day after an unprecedented attack, in which hundreds of pagers used by Hezbollah members exploded nearly simultaneously.
This assault exceeded the scale and execution of recent covert assassinations and cyber-attacks in the region. The Iran-backed militant group reported that the wireless devices began to explode around 3:30 p.m. local time.
Hezbollah reported that 16 of its members were among those killed on Wednesday, although the organization did not provide further details about the events. Lebanon's communications ministry noted that the exploded walkie-talkies were a discontinued model manufactured by the Japanese company ICOM. The IC-V82 radios were neither sourced from a recognized distributor nor officially licensed and had not been inspected by security services. The company clarified that this model had been discontinued a decade ago, and it was unable to ascertain whether these devices were counterfeit or possibly shipped from their production line.
