Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating a video claiming to show an attack on the Conoco base, where U.S. forces are stationed, in Deir ez-Zor province, eastern Syria.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading, as the video does not depict an attack on the Conoco American base in Syria.
Israeli Airstrikes Hit the Southern Suburbs of Beirut
News accounts published the video on September 28, claiming it showed Israeli airstrikes targeting the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Other media outlets captured the scene from a different angle as part of their coverage of the Israeli bombardment in southern Lebanon.
On Saturday, September 28, the Israeli military announced the beginning of an operation in the southern suburbs of Beirut, following previous airstrikes on Friday evening that resulted in the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and other leaders. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the Israeli bombardment left 33 people dead and injured 195 others.
In response, Hezbollah announced on Saturday that it had targeted the Kabri area in northern Israel with a "barrage of Fadi-1 rockets."
Targeting the American Base in Syria
The claim circulated after explosions occurred due to an attack on the Conoco American base in the Deir ez-Zor countryside of eastern Syria early Sunday morning.
According to local sources reported by Anadolu Agency, Iranian-backed groups stationed west of the Euphrates River targeted the American base, and loud explosions were heard in the vicinity of the facility. In response, American fighter jets targeted positions held by Iranian-backed groups in the center of Deir ez-Zor city.
