The Claim

Iran has officially declared a state of war against Israel following its retaliatory attack .

Emerging story

Following the Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel late on Tuesday in which nearly 200 missiles were directed at Israel, social media users claimed that Iran had officially declared a state of war against Israel following its retaliatory attack.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be fake. No such statements were made by Iran’s officials and no news by any media outlets indicate that Iran has declared war on Israel.

Iran Stated That Its Attack Was Concluded

Misbar’s team did not find any records indicating that Iran has declared a state of war against Israel.

On the contrary, Iran said on Wednesday that its missile attack on Israel was finished barring further provocation.

While there is no evidence from any media outlets or Iranian officials indicating that Iran would still carry out other attacks against Israel or indicating that Iran has declared a state of war against Israel, many media outlets have reported that Iran’s retaliatory attack has concluded.

Reuters reported early on Wednesday that Iran’s missile attack on Israel was finished.

Likewise, NBC News reported that Iran has concluded the attack in their reports after Iran’s retaliatory attack.

The Middle East Monitor also reported that Iran has concluded its attack unless further retaliation is needed.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that Iran’s attack is “concluded” unless Israel decides to retaliate. “In that scenario, our response will be stronger and more powerful,”  he threatened on social media early on Wednesday.

The minister stressed that Iran’s attack was a lawful self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter.

A Widely Regional War Is Feared In The Middle East

Following Iran’s missile attack on Israel on Tuesday in which Iran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles into Israel, which marked the second Iranian aerial attack on Israel in less than six months, Israel vowed to retaliate.

Iran said that its attack against Israel came after tremendous restraint to give space and time for a ceasefire in Gaza, describing its attack as lawful self-defense. Meanwhile, Israel’s prime minister Benjamen Netanyahu described Iran’s attack as a “big mistake,” and threatened that Iran would pay for it, raising fears that a wide regional war may have been ignited in the Middle East.

Potential Outcomes of The Israeli-Iranian Tensions

Although no casualties have been reported in Israel, a wide regional war is feared to be ignited. Israel is expected to respond in a far more comprehensive manner, targeting substantial targets in Iran including Iran’s nuclear facilities. However, Iran has made it clear that any response from Israel would result in further escalation. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tuesday’s operation was “only a portion of our power.”

Netanyahu is described as having a freer hand. It is hard for Washington to try to influence his actions and much tougher for the prime minister’s opponents to call for his ousting.
