Old Video Shows Aftermath of Israeli Attack on Rafah, Gaza
Contrary to the viral claim circulating on social media, the video is unrelated to the recent Iranian missile strike on Israel that occurred Tuesday night.
Misbar’s investigative team traced the original footage to February 12, 2024, when Palestinian photographer Hani Alshaer uploaded it to his Instagram account.
The video depicts the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike on Al-Shaboura camp in Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip.
In the video's caption, the photographer mentioned that it was filmed following the Israeli military's claim of invading the area on the night of February 12.
Deadly Israeli Assault on Refugee Camps in Rafah
On the night of February 12, Rafah endured one of the most devastating Israeli bombing campaigns in recent months. Over a span of roughly two hours, the attacks claimed the lives of 68 Palestinians, including 19 children and 13 women. Several of the victims were internally displaced individuals seeking refuge in Rafah, many of whom were killed while sleeping in tents. Hundreds more were injured.
The bombardment of homes in Rafah’s Al-Shaboura and Yibna neighborhoods, as well as other residential areas, took residents by surprise. Helicopters and gunboats also participated in the assault.
According to the ReliefWeb report, Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes on February 12, 2024. The raids, which lasted for about two hours, targeted at least 15 residential buildings, two mosques, agricultural lands, and areas near the Egyptian-Palestinian border.
Iran’s Recent Missile Attack on Israel
On Tuesday, Iran launched a two-wave ballistic missile strike in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last week and the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.
The barrage of 180 missiles reportedly caused no casualties, as the majority were intercepted, according to the Israeli military. Iran claimed the strikes were aimed at three military bases in the Tel Aviv region.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed swift retaliation, stating that Iran had "made a big mistake and will pay," while the U.S. reaffirmed its support for Israel.
By Wednesday, the Israeli military reported that several air force bases were damaged in the missile assault, though no aircraft were affected, according to Israeli media.
Near Tel Aviv, close to Mossad headquarters, a BBC correspondent observed several severely damaged vehicles and a crater, 8 to 10 meters deep, reportedly caused by one of the missile impacts.
