Emerging story
Recently, social media users have been circulating a video consisting of two scenes, claiming it documented Hurricane Milton sweeping through the state of Florida.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading, as the two scenes in the video are from 2022 and do not depict Hurricane Milton, which recently struck the state of Florida.
Powerful Tornado Hits Kansas in 2022
The first scene (from the beginning of the video until the 17th second) was filmed on April 29, 2022, showing the moment a tornado struck the city of Andover, Kansas, in the central United States.
The video was captured by meteorologist Reed Timmer using a drone.
The second scene (from the 18th second to the end of the video) was posted by Cassie Wilson, a meteorologist at the local NBC station KSHB, on April 30, 2022. She noted that a viewer of the local KWCH station, Aaron Chu, captured this scene as the 2022 Andover tornado passed south of his home.
Local media reported that the video was taken by Aaron Chu near the town of Minneha and the city of Andover on April 29, 2022.
According to the Wichita office of the National Weather Service, the EF-3 tornado that hit Andover, a suburb of Wichita, lasted 21 minutes and left a path of destruction spanning 12 miles.
The tornado's greatest width was 440 yards. It originated in Sedgwick County and moved into Andover, destroying thousands of homes and businesses, causing power outages, killing three students, and injuring four others.
Following this, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly declared a state of disaster emergency, authorizing the use of state resources to assist in response and recovery efforts.
Hurricane Milton Batters Florida’s Coast
The claim emerged following Hurricane Milton's sweep across the western coast of Florida in the southern United States on Thursday, October 10.
Just two weeks after Hurricane Helene affected Florida and other states in the Southeast, Hurricane Milton—a Category 3 storm—made landfall, bringing powerful winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center stated in a bulletin issued on Thursday that Milton made landfall as an "extremely dangerous" Category 3 hurricane on a five-tier scale.
The center added that data indicate the eye of the hurricane made landfall near Siesta Key in Sarasota County on Florida's west coast, accompanied by winds of up to 205 km/h, and warned that sea waves could rise to 4 meters.
According to the same source, Hurricane Milton has moved past the east coast of Florida but continues to produce “destructive hurricane-force winds” and heavy rainfall in the central-eastern region of the state.
In the same context, the U.S. National Weather Service reported that the hurricane's maximum sustained winds reached about 100 mph (160 km/h) while it passed near Fort Meade, about 45 miles east of Tampa, early Thursday morning.
It was added that the hurricane is expected to continue moving east until it enters the Atlantic Ocean late on Thursday, October 10.
Tragic Deaths and Devastating Damage in Florida
Hurricane Milton left more than 3 million homes and businesses across Florida without power early Thursday morning, causing extensive damage to homes and flooding roads.
Federal Emergency Management Administrator Deanne Criswell confirmed that more than 70,000 people sought refuge in government shelters overnight after evacuation orders were issued by 31 counties.
The hurricane resulted in fatalities after striking several homes in a senior living community in St. Lucie County. In St. Petersburg, strong winds toppled cranes and caused damage to Tropicana Field, home of Major League Baseball, while water service was interrupted due to damage to a main water line.
Florida announced that water line repairs would begin as soon as it is safe for crews to work. In Tampa, roads were submerged, and explosions from power transformers lit up the city's skyline.
