Israel’s Invasion of Lebanon Fuels Ongoing Conflict

The confrontation between Hezbollah and Israel escalated after previously sporadic fighting erupted on October 8, 2023, the day after Hamas fighters launched an unprecedented attack on Israel.

Hezbollah has since launched more than 8,000 missiles into northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It has also fired anti-tank missiles at armored vehicles and targeted military locations with explosive drones.

Israel has killed more than a dozen key Hezbollah commanders and appears to have destroyed hundreds more weapons in airstrikes.

On October 1, Israeli troops entered southern Lebanon to eradicate the Hezbollah threat. Approximately 1,000 civilians were killed during the fighting.

On October 16, Lebanese state media reported 138 airstrikes on Lebanon in the last 24 hours, with most occurring in the south and Nabatieh.

While Israeli forces say 90 projectiles—usually meaning rockets—have crossed into the country in the last 24 hours.
