Emerging story
After Donald Trump won the U.S. presidency, social media users widely shared a claim alleging Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree announced that Yemen's Houthis ceased operations in international waters.
X users attributed the statement to the Houthis, stating, “Our operations in international waters were solely defensive, and we now announce their complete cessation.”
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be fake.
The Houthi spokesperson did not announce the Yemeni group ceased operations in international waters.
Yemen’s Houthis Did Not Cease Operations in International Water
After searching the official X account of Yahya Saree, the Houthi spokesperson, Misbar’s team found no such statement posted on the account.
Misbar found that the most recent post from the Houthi spokesperson was a warning to shipping companies against acquiring assets or properties from Israeli shipping firms.
The Houthis warned that any vessels involved in such transactions would be at risk of being targeted by Houthi forces.
The Red Sea Crisis
The Red Sea crisis erupted on October 19, 2023, as the Yemen Houthi movement launched missiles and armed drones at Israel, demanding an end to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis captured and attacked numerous merchant and naval vessels in the Red Sea, prompting hundreds of airstrikes on missile sites and other targets by U.S. and allied forces.
On November 1, the Houthis released a video showing a massive march in one of the main squares of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
The demonstration proves widespread public and official commitment to supporting Gaza and Lebanon and signaled readiness to confront any U.S.-Israeli attacks.
