Emerging story
Social media users widely shared a photo claiming to show different scenes from the aftermath of the recent Yemeni Houthi missile attack on the “Anadolu S” ship.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating photo and found the claim to be misleading.
Misbar’s investigative team conducted a reverse image search on the different scenes displayed in the photo and found them all to be misleading.
Outdated Photos Show Previous Houthi Attacks on Ships
Misbar’s team found the first shot to be uploaded by The Times of Israel as showing a Houthi attack on the oil tanker “CHIOS LION.”
The Houthis targeted the tanker by unmanned surface vessels in the Red Sea on July 15, 2024.
Misbar’s team verified the second scene and found it to be older than claimed. Yemeni military media uploaded the original video, showing the Yemeni Armed Forces targeting the “TRANSWORLD NAVIGATOR” ship on June 23, 2024.
Misbar investigated the third shot from the circulating photo and found it to be old. Yemeni military media uploaded the full video on June 19, 2024, showing two Houthi-armed boats targeting and sinking the “Tutor” ship in the Red Sea.
Moreover, the fourth scene is also outdated. Misbar’s team found the original photo to be uploaded to a Turkish website in 2016.
Turkey Denounces Houthi Attack on Turkish-Owned Vessel in Red Sea
Yemen’s Houthis announced on November 19, 2024, targeting a cargo ship in the Red Sea, while a multinational naval task force reported two missiles striking near the Panama-flagged vessel.
The Houthis said the attack was part of their campaign of solidarity with Gaza.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree confirmed the operation, stating that they targeted the “Anadolu S” in the Red Sea using ballistic and naval missiles, achieving an accurate and direct hit.
Turkey's foreign ministry condemned the attack, calling it a Houthi missile strike on the Anadolu S, a Panama-flagged cargo ship owned by a Turkish company. “We condemn the missile attacks by the Houthis on the Panama-flagged dry cargo ship Anadolu S, owned by a Turkish company, while sailing off the coast of Yemen,” the ministry stated.
The ministry also emphasized that “necessary initiatives are being taken to prevent the recurrence of a similar incident.”
