Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be misleading. The viral video is not recent and does not show Polish people declaring Poland “Christian,” or protesting against migration as alleged.

Far-right March Celebrating Poland’s Independence Day in 2017

Through reverse image search, Misbar’s team found that the video was published online 7 years ago. A YouTube channel called “HUNGARY ULTRASLIBERI” uploaded the video in November 2017, under a Hungarian title that translates, “Polish National Anthem at the Independence March 11.11.2017.”

The video could be found online on social media accounts, which also said it showed a scene from the Independence Day celebrations in Poland. An X user called “Casual Ultra Official” shared the video in November 2017, saying that it shows a march of independence in Warsaw.

The New York Times described the people seen in the footage as far-right nationalists who marched waving red-and-white Polish flags and carrying flares on November 11, 2017. The crowd was described to have outnumbered those at official government events earlier in that year.

While people in the viral video could be seen carrying flares, others in the crowd held banners of white supremacy, including one that read “White Europe of brotherly nations,” according to the New York Times. The crowd also included people who carried signs equating Islam with terrorism, waved signs denouncing same-sex marriage, and carried banners of the National Radical Camp, an anti-Semitic group founded before World War II on extreme nationalist values.

Every November 11, Polish people commemorate the reinstatement of sovereignty at the end of World War I.

Poland Vows to Block Asylum-seekers

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk vowed to protect the Polish eastern borders in October. The plan is to temporarily suspend the right of arrivals to claim asylum.

Although Tusk’s plan violates international law and E.U. rules, he insisted on it saying that they must protect the Polish and European border.

In response to Poland’s plan, Amnesty International described the plan as “flagrantly unlawful.” Amnesty considered Poland playing politics with the rights of refugees and migrants, and endangering the rights of people seeking safety.
