Emerging story
A video went viral on X recently claiming to show Netanyahu being attacked and beaten up in Israel's parliament by MPs.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the viral claim and found it to be misleading.
Outdated 2013 Video of Bulgarian Caucus Fight
Through reverse image search, Misbar’s team found that an extended version of the viral video was published ten years ago by the Associated Press.
In January 2013, the Associated Press published a video titled, “Raw: Leader Threatened With Gun During Speech.”
The viral video contained two segments from the original one uploaded by the AP. The first segment, showing a man appearing to assault the speaker, is taken from the 00:01 to 00:08 timestamp of AP’s video. The second segment, depicting a group of men punching and kicking the attacker on the ground, is extracted from the 00:26 to 00:37 timestamp from AP’s video.
Some users who circulated this claim shared a video where Netanyahu appears to be talking in an office, adding credibility to their claims. However, the scene of Netanyahu shows him in the Prime Minister's Office, not the parliament, as claimed.
The Hebrew words behind him, משרד ראש הממשלה, translate to “Prime Minister's Office.”
Moreover, the first scene of Netanyahu talking at the Prime Minister's Office is incompatible with the following scenes of the fight. The two scenes depict entirely different places. In the first scene, Netanyahu was talking without a microphone, while the following scene showed the speaker talking with a microphone. Also, the background behind Netanyahu in the first scene is navy blue without any other color, while the following scene's background has different shades of blue.
A Failed Assassination Attempt on a Bulgarian Opposition Leader
The fight shown in the viral video shows a failed assassination attempt in 2019 on an ethnic Turkish party leader. A Bulgarian national and ethnic Turk climbed up the podium, and pointed a gas pistol at Ahmed Dogan, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, as he was delivering a speech.
Dogan struck the man before he could pull the trigger, while other delegates wrestled the assailant to the ground. The scenes of the viral video showed several people punching, kicking, and stomping on the man when he was on the ground.
The attacker was later arrested and found to have a criminal record for drug possession, robbery, and hooliganism.
Israelis Attack Netanyahu’s Home with Flash Bombs
On November 17, three Israelis were arrested over the launch of two flash bombs on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea, northern Israel.
The police said that Netanyahu and his family were not at home at the time.
According to the Israeli press, one of the suspects was a senior reserve officer, a brigadier general, who has shown disapproval of Netanyahu over the past two years.
