Pakistani Army Chief’s Field Training Visit
On December 3, 2024, General Syed Asim Munir, chief of the Pakistani Army Staff (COAS), visited troops participating in a field training exercise near Narowal and Sialkot, Pakistan, and spent the day alongside them. The training was conducted by the Pakistan Army’s XXX Corps (Gujranwala) and its subsidiary formations.
According to a press release from the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate of the Pakistan Armed Forces, after observing the field training, the COAS affirmed that "the Pakistan Armed Forces, with the resolute support of the nation, are fully capable of safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our beloved motherland against the entire spectrum of threats." Munir also spoke about "the importance of maintaining constant preparations to counter any potential threat posed by the enemy."
Chinese-Pakistani Joint Field Training
There is no record of the presence of Chinese troops on December 3, 2024, when the COAS visited troops near Narowal and Sialkot. The most recent record of a visit to a joint Chinese-Pakistani training exercise was in Pabbi, Pakistan, 400 km from Sialkot. On November 29, 2024, General Syed Asim Munir visited the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) in Pabbi and interacted with participants in the joint training program, which began on November 19.
In late November 2024, Pakistan announced a "comprehensive military operation" against separatist groups in the southwestern province of Balochistan. The region is known for frequent clashes between separatist fighters and security forces, which in the past have involved Chinese nationals as targets of separatist attacks.
Many Chinese nationals work in Pakistan and are involved in Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure development strategy launched by China in 2013 aimed at enhancing trade and connectivity through the construction of roads, railways, ports, and energy projects across Asia, Europe, Africa, and beyond. Although China has pushed for measures to protect its citizens after these attacks, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian did not directly comment on whether China is involved in Pakistan’s plan.
