Misbar investigated the circulating video and found the claim to be misleading. The footage shared on X is actually from the earthquake that took place in Taiwan in April 2024.

On April 3, 2024, Taiwan experienced its strongest earthquake in 25 years, registering a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located 18 kilometers southeast of Hualien City, where the video of the building was recorded.

Across the island, more than 100 buildings were damaged, with half of them located in Hualien County. However, the death toll a week after the event remained relatively low at 13, compared to the 2,415 deaths recorded in the 1999 earthquake that struck Taiwan.

Speaking to the media in April 2024, Hualien Mayor Wei Chia-yen attributed the relatively low death toll in his city to advanced preparation. "Requirements for earthquake resistance have been built into Taiwan's building codes since 1974," writes The New York Times.

Al Jazeera reports that the epicenter of the quake was located in Tingri County, at the foothills of Mount Everest. The county, home to about 62,000 people, is under the administration of Shigatse, a prefecture-level city in Tibet.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), at least 126 people were killed and more than 3,600 houses were damaged. Local witness Sangji Dangzhi told AFP by phone, "Here, the houses are made of dirt, so when the earthquake came, many houses collapsed."
